For years, West Lafayette has been known more for its Purdue University campus and scattered retail areas than for a true downtown core. While areas like Sagamore Parkway have served as commercial hubs, the city has lacked a centralized downtown district—until now.
The Birth of a New Downtown
The Levy Development project marks a turning point for West Lafayette. The city council identified a stretch from the Wabash Landing levee along the river up through Chauncey Hill as the foundation for a new downtown. This area, once a patchwork of older developments and parking lots, is rapidly transforming into a vibrant urban center.
Major Developments Underway
Construction is visible everywhere, with cranes dotting the skyline and new streets taking shape. The focus is on large residential projects, primarily apartments, alongside some retail spaces. The existing street grid is being expanded and modernized to support this growth, with the goal of creating a walkable, connected community.
Expanding the Plan: Oakwood Village and Beyond
The downtown plan is about to get even bigger. The city is adding 82 acres to the original 262-acre plan, extending the downtown boundary to include the Oakwood Village area, located south and west of the existing Levy district. This expansion will further integrate residential living, retail, and green spaces into the heart of West Lafayette.
