Meijer Announces Plans for Third Superstore in Greater Lafayette Area
Meijer’s Presence in Lafayette and Expansion Plans
Meijer, a large retail and grocery superstore similar to Walmart and Target, is planning to open a third location in the greater Lafayette area. This Michigan-based company primarily operates in the Midwest and has been expanding rapidly in recent years, though it is not yet nationwide. Meijer has served Lafayette with two stores for years—one on the east side dating back to at least the mid to late 1990s and another in West Lafayette on State Road 52, which opened about a decade ago.
Recently, they have filed plans and received preliminary approval from the Area Plan Commission for a new superstore on the south side of Lafayette. This new store will be located at the southeast corner of the Concord Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway intersection, right next to the south side Walmart. The new Meijer will use the existing stoplight on Concord that currently services Walmart for its entry and exit. While no exact construction timeline has been announced, the project is expected to begin soon, potentially within months to a year.
Strategic Location on Lafayette’s Growing South Side
The south side of Lafayette, particularly around Veterans Memorial Parkway (formerly known as 350 South), has emerged as a burgeoning commercial, retail, and dining hub. Along with downtown Lafayette and the US 26 corridor, this area is developing into one of the city’s key retail “villages.” Meijer’s new location will complement this vibrant area with a large retail center, a gas station branded with Meijer, and several outlots for additional retailers.
This development signals robust retail demand on Lafayette’s south side and points toward further commercial growth. The stretch between Veterans Memorial Parkway and where State Road 52 meets Interstate 65 near Lebanon is anticipated to continue developing into a more extensive commercial corridor. Although it may take 10 to 20 years for this new hub to fully form, ongoing patterns of expansion suggest the area will evolve into a major retail zone alongside the northern developments connected to Indianapolis and Lebanon.
What to Expect at the New Meijer Store
The new Meijer superstore will offer a broad mix of grocery and retail options under one roof, continuing the company’s supercenter model. Like their other locations, this store will include a gas station on-site. The presence of outlots means the development will also invite other retailers, providing a diverse shopping experience for visitors.
Meijer’s expansion reflects its continuing strategy to meet the needs of growing communities with convenient, one-stop shopping solutions. The Lafayette south side location will strengthen Meijer’s footprint in the region and serve the increasing population and commercial activity there.
This development continues a trend of Meijer’s growth in the Midwest, where the company is opening new stores and smaller neighborhood markets, aiming for convenient access and wide product selections for their customers. While this Lafayette superstore will be a major addition locally, it fits into Meijer’s broader expansion strategy across the Midwest states.
The timeline for construction and opening remains flexible but should be expected within the near future based on preliminary approvals. Residents and businesses in the Lafayette area can look forward to a major new retail destination contributing to the south side’s expanding commercial landscape.
