Lafayette School Renovations Support Community Growth
Major Investment in Tippecanoe Schools
The Tippecanoe School Corporation has announced major renovations and expansions for both McCutcheon High School on the south side and Harrison High School on the north side. Bids for these projects are expected later this spring, with a total estimated cost of $25 million. These improvements are part of a long-term effort to ensure that local schools can continue to meet the needs of a growing community.
Preparing for Continued Development
As new employers and housing developments take root throughout Greater Lafayette, many residents have wondered how local schools will keep up with rising enrollment. Superintendent Scott Hanback has emphasized that the district has both the capacity and the plans to support continued growth. Some of that capacity already exists within current buildings, while other pieces require new infrastructure and strategic expansions. The upcoming renovations reflect both approaches—building out existing space while executing long-term plans for future demand.
McCutcheon High School Expansion
At McCutcheon High School, plans call for a new athletics facility to be built just southwest of the main campus. This move will shift tennis courts and concession areas to make room for future academic and athletic facilities. In a second phase, additional baseball and soccer fields, along with new locker rooms, are under consideration. Inside the main building, renovations will include updates to classrooms for technical education, family and consumer sciences, special education, and career sciences. These upgrades will free up valuable space while modernizing key learning areas to support evolving student needs.
Improvements at Harrison High School
Farther north, Harrison High School will receive updates to its cafeteria, kitchen, and serving areas. The improvements aim to streamline meal service—potentially reducing from five lunch periods to four—and increase overall efficiency. Additional work is planned for the Harrison football stadium and athletic facilities to prepare the campus for future expansion. The school corporation already owns 99 acres of land south of Harrison, providing space for growth as new families move into the area.
Growth Driven by Economic Development
The expansions come as Tippecanoe County experiences significant economic momentum, particularly with the arrival of SK hynix and other major employers. As thousands of new jobs phase in, the district will monitor how many families with school-aged children relocate to the area. Both McCutcheon and Harrison campuses are strategically preparing for that growth, ensuring that schools, neighborhoods, and infrastructure develop in balance with the community’s future.
Supporting a Growing Lafayette Community
These projects illustrate a forward-thinking approach to community planning. By expanding educational facilities alongside residential and commercial growth, the Tippecanoe School Corporation is reinforcing its commitment to supporting families across West Central Indiana. From new athletic complexes to updated learning spaces, these investments highlight the region’s confidence in its continued development and its dedication to providing quality education for decades to come.
